Dr. Kearney is an eastern North Carolinian native and a graduate of East Carolina University (ECU). He holds a Bachelors of Science (BS) in Urban and Regional Planning, a Master of Public Health (MPH) from The University of South Florida and a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), with a concentration in Environmental Health Sciences, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Prior to joining ECU, Dr. Kearney worked in environmental public health at the local, state and federal levels of government. He returned to eastern North Carolina after working as an epidemiologist for the State of Florida Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Environmental Health in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a graduate of the CDC, Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute and CDC Environmental Health Emerging Leaders. He has received several awards including the NC Asthma Champion Award, and the Senator Ken Pruitt, Medallion of Excellence for his contributions to the field of environmental public health.
