What motivated you to attend East Carolina University?
I chose East Carolina University because of its commitment to serving rural and underserved populations. The university’s focus on addressing health disparities resonates deeply with my passion for improving healthcare access and outcomes, particularly in communities that face systemic barriers.
What do you appreciate most about your ECU education?
I deeply appreciate the supportive learning environment, dedicated faculty, and the practical opportunities ECU provides to apply public health theories to real-world challenges. The opportunities for growth, both academically and professionally, have been truly transformative. In my first year, I served as the treasurer for the Public Health Organization (PHO) and worked as a graduate assistant, experiences that helped me build a strong foundation in leadership and collaboration. This year, I am honored to lead the PHO as its president and to work as a clinical research assistant for ECU Health Tarboro Family Medicine. In this role, I contribute to a large randomized clinical trial led by Dr. Doyle Cummings, a faculty member in the Department of Public Health, focused on improving blood pressure control. These hands-on experiences, combined with the mentorship and unwavering support of ECU’s faculty, have been invaluable in shaping my education and preparing me for a meaningful career in public health.
What are your career ambitions?
I aspire to become a cardiothoracic surgeon and public health specialist. My career goals include addressing cardiac health disparities and investigating how health insurance policies impact access to care in rural populations. Through a combination of clinical expertise and public health research, I aim to shape policies that promote equity and improve outcomes for underserved communities.
In your spare time, what are your hobbies and interests?
In my spare time, I enjoy creative projects like drawing and photography. I also love playing the piano, swimming, reading, and staying active. Spending time with my two beautiful dogs Henessy and Archie and with family and friends helps me recharge and balance my academic and professional demands.
