MPH Internship Profiles – Shelby Johnson
Concentration: Health Administration
Internship Site: Leo Jenkins Cancer Center – Division of Hematology/Oncology Clinical Trials Office
Interning at the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center was most definitely an enjoyable experience. I feel this opportunity has prepared me for the real world given the experiences I have gained in the two short months I worked here. I feel placing myself in an environment I want to work in after I graduate is what truly made my internship enjoyable as well as practical. I was fortunate enough to gain experience in finance and Human Resources (HR) for a clinical trials office. The biggest challenges I faced were adapting to the new environment of a more sedentary work place and a new staff, as well as understanding the culture of the workplace. There was always something new to learn from the staff for the work we were completing. I quickly learned no question is a dumb question, especially with invoices, financial reviews, and administrative tasks. I enjoyed the relationships I formed with staff and most enjoyed the challenges I faced and surpassed.
My advice for future MPH students would be to take the time to find an internship site that will amplify your want to apply what you’ve gained to your future career. Experience is everything on a resume so therefore, this experience needs to be worthwhile! Don’t just be a staff member that’s present (punching in and out), instead make a difference for yourself and an impact on the organization. Most importantly, learn from the work you are completing!
