MPH Internship Profiles – Shavette D. Campbell
Concentration: Health Behavior
Field Placement Site: North Carolina Institute of Medicine
In my role as the Graduate Digital Communications intern, I had the opportunity to complete an overall analysis of all social media platforms and formulate strategies to increase engagement and outreach into our online communities – furthering discourse on topics related to health policy. I enjoyed the environment I worked in – and the opportunity to challenge myself and learn different ways to disseminate health information with the world. I had the pleasure of working with a great collective of people always willing to help. It was great to sit in on task force meetings with influential and key stakeholders in North Carolina and participate in groundbreaking discussions on change and reform.
I particularly loved the Perinatal Health task force that aligned perfectly with my interest in Maternal-Child health. Also, I worked with the North Carolina Medical Journal (NCMJ), which allowed me to explore the archives of medical journals dating back to the early 1900s and find fascinating stories, commentary, and research articles. Lastly, I had the pleasure of writing a blog post for the NCIOM which gave me more insight into health communications, health behavior, and the importance of providing updates to the community on the progress we at the NCIOM are making – shaping policy for a healthier North Carolina.
