MPH Internship Profiles – Sara Stevens
Concentration: Epidemiology
Field Placement Site: North Carolina Agromedicine Institute
During my internship at the NC Agromedicine Institute, I worked on a lung function study of farmers in North Carolina. I was able to look at how different lung function values were influenced by BMI, race, age, sex, crop, and/or farm location. The data that I used for this project (sample size, n=735) came from lung function fit testing that was conducted by the Institute from the years 2017-2019. I collaborated with multidiscipline professionals including the Institute Director, an Agrisafe nurse that works with the institute, as well as a statistician.
This was a huge learning experience where I was able to put into practice what I had learned in MPH classes such as Epi Methods.
